Day The Earth Stood Still

Of the three new movies in wide release this weekend "The Day the Earth Stood Still" stole the #1 spot at the movie box office, sliding in with just over $31 million.

Last week's #1 movie, "Four Christmases," slid to #2, collecting $13 million, for a three week take of nearly $90 million.

That other new festive movie release, "Nothing Like The Holidays," entered the movie box office race with $3.5 million and at the #7 spot.

The movie box office gods weren't as kind to "Delgo." The film managed #18 and a touch over $500,000 in over 2150 theaters, or an average of only $245 per theater for the entire weekend. That comes out to about a movie box office take from each theater, during each showing of "Delgo" this weekend, of just over $14. Or, on average, about 2 people in the audience per showing.

Also new in movie theaters this weekend but in very limited release, a number of movies that are getting their "2009 Oscar" push.

As for the most popular new limited releases at the movie box office:

The Bollywood film "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" in 105 theaters, nationwide, came in at #15 with $1.25 million.

Meryl Streep's "Doubt," in only 15 theaters, nationwide, secured the #19 spot at the movie box office and collected $550,000 for the coffers.

Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino," in only 6 theaters, claimed the #20 spot at the movie box office, with a nearly $50,000 per screen average.

"The Reader," starring Kate Winslett, came in at #24 and on only 8 movie screens.

"Che," in only two movie theaters, took away $30,000 per location.
