"January 18-20, 2008 Movie Box Office"
"Cloverfield" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com

Paramount was certainly happy with the $40+ million debut for their B-movie-mockumentary-horror film
"Cloverfield." Overall, a dreadful movie, but what do we know? It seems no one, not even the Scientologists, who we thought were loyal friends and true, gave a rat's ass about fellow Scientologist (and wife of Tom Cruise) Katie Holmes's first movie since delivering Baby Suri,
"Mad Money." Women had wedding bells in their heads, with
"27 Dresses." The
Katherine Heigl comedy from 20th Century Fox, debuted at #2 with over $20 million. While no one put their money where the Golden Globe committee put their votes, e.g.,
"Sweeney Tood," nor
"Atonement," both Best Picture Golden Globe Award winners, next weekend may make a tad of a difference at the box office and Awards Season movies. The
"2008 Oscar Nominations" are announced live, right here, Tuesday 22 January at 5:30AM (PST), and Oscar noms usually give any movie a nice little push at the box office. All in all, however, with the impressive but not spectacular debut of
"Cloverfield," and great show for
"27 Dresses," (and the continuing successes of
"Alvin And The Chipmunks," "I Am Legend" and
"National Treasure 2," as well as
"The Bucket List"), this weekend proved the most successful in January movie box office history.
