HSM3

This weekend, in 3623 movie theaters nationwide, "High School Musical 3," (the first in the trilogy to appear on the big screen), debuted with exactly $42 million - for the #1 spot at the movie box office. However, "High School Musical 3" failed to live up to its Disney inspired 'hype.' Remember, earlier this year, the (also) G-rated "Hannah Montana 3D" concert movie opened in only 687 theaters (1/5 the number of "HSM3") and grabbed $31 million its first three days in movie theaters. "Saw 5" did better than expected, coming in with just under $31 million, its first weekend in movie theaters. Clint Eastwood's "Changeling," starring Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, grabbed $33,500 in each of the 15 venues it debuted, allowing it - in just 15 theaters - to enter the Top 20 at the movie box office this weekend.

Also of note. Anne Hathaway did better in "Rachel Getting Married," its third weekend in movie theaters (in limited release), compared to the brand new film she headlines, "Passengers." The movie "Passengers" was released in secrecy by its distributor, Sony Pictures, in only 125 theaters nationwide. It grabbed less than $1500 per screen. "Rachel Getting Married," on the other hand, in 107 theaters, hoarded more than $8500 per screen, and ended up in the Top 20. Look for Anne Hathaway to receive a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her role in "Rachel Getting Married." (If you're Wild About Movies, you'll know that Anne Hathaway was the only one of the four main characters in "Brokeback Mountain" to NOT receive an Oscar nod).
