"Oscar Trivia: Day 7"
FILMS NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE BUT NOT NOMINATED FOR DIRECTING
by Tim Nasson
January 9, 2008

Color Purple Movie Poster

For today's "Oscar Trivia" - you'll find out all of the Films Nominated for the Best Picture Oscar But Were Not Nominated for the Best Director Oscar - and there are A LOT, including "The Color Purple," we were shocked to find out. "The Color Purple" was nominated for 11 Oscars, and won zero. We knew that. But we had forgotten that its director, Steven Spielberg, got the shaft. Since then, however, Spielberg has won the Oscar for Best Director two times, ("Schindler's List" & "Saving Private Ryan") and just may do so again in 2010 for "Lincoln."

+ Note: For the first 20 years of Oscars ten movies were nominated for Best Picture.

Among all of the above directors given the shaft by the Academy - not receiving a Best Director Oscar nomination, even though their picture was nominated - the most glaring examples, in addition to "The Color Purple"...

"As Good As It Gets" - Both Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson won the top acting Oscars and the movie was nominated for Best Picture. But James L. Brooks, who won the Best Director Oscar a decade earlier, for "Terms of Endearment," was left out of the races.

And, of course, "Driving Miss Daisy" WON the Best Picture Oscar but its director, Bruce Beresford, was not nominated for an Oscar.
