"Oscar Trivia: Day 19"
Directors Who Have Won More Than One Oscar For Best Director
by Tim Nasson
February 19, 2008

Ben Hur Movie Poster

More interesting, in some cases, with the list below, are the movies for which the directors did not win the Best Director Oscar, yet for which they were nominated.

Especially: Billy Wilder. Although nominated for the Best Director Oscar, he did not win for Sunset Boulevard or Some Like It Hot, both, arguably, more popular than the two movies for which he did win the Best Director Oscar.

And Frank Capra. He won three Best Director Oscars but even though he was nominated for the Best Director Oscar for one of the most popular movies of all time, "It's A Wonderful Life," he lost to William Wyler, who won that year for "The Best Years of Our Lives."

Can you recall the two movies for which Clint Eastwood was nominated for the Best Director Oscar but didn't win for? "Letters From Iwo Jima" and "Mystic River."

And the one Oscar that evaded Oliver Stone, for which he was nominated for Best Director? "JFK."
