Color Purple Poster

In most cases, think Clint Eastwood who starred on television in "Rawhide," or Sally Field who was "The Flying Nun," graduating from television to the big screen - and going on to win an Oscar - is huge, fantastic news.

Sometimes the pendulum swings the other way, however, with an actor winning an Oscar and graduating to television. Or, in the case of two-time Best Actress Oscar winner Sally Field, going from the big screen, to the small screen, (and winning an Emmy for Best Actress on "Brothers & Sisters"), and back to the big screen, in "Lincoln," in what is her potential third Oscar winning role.

Below, the list of Oscar nominated and Oscar winning actors and actresses who are currently on television either in first run programs or on telelvision shows in wide syndication.

Oscar Trivia Main Page

Killing_Fields_PosterSam Waterston

Best Actor Oscar Nominee - "The Killing Fields"

You know Sam Waterston best, however, for his nearly twenty year stint on "Law & Order," as Jack McCoy

Fatal_Attraction_PosterGlenn Close

Best Actress Oscar Nominee - "Dangerous Liasons"

Best Actress Oscar Nominee - "Fatal Attraction"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "The Natural"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "The Big Chill"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "The World According To Garp"

Five time Oscar loser Glenn Close knows how to cause some Damage. In the critically acclaimed cable television show that begins its second season this year, "Damages, " Close proves that five time Oscar nominees can sometimes shine brighter on the boob tube than the silver screen. And don't forget about Glenn Close's role on "The Shield," before "Damages."

Ghost_Movie_PosterWhoopi Goldberg

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner - "Ghost"

Best Actress Oscar Nominee - "The Color Purple"

Currently, Whoopi Goldberg is the second most visible Oscar winning actor on television, appearing daily, as one of the five co-hosts of the morning talk show "The View." And imagine she and the #1 most visible person in this category - are both BLACK! Obama for President?

Color_Purple_PosterOprah

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "The Color Purple"

Need we say anymore? Without a doubt, Oprah turned TV into her own, new world. And instead of picking movie roles she brought American back to the bedroom - with books - picking authors to become stars on her show - with her Book Of The Month!

Starting_Over_PosterCandice Bergen

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Starting Over"

Movies may not have been Candice Bergen's calling. But TV certainly has been. With "Murphy Brown" and the current ABC hit "Boston Legal," Candice Bergen is one of television's greatest actresses, especially opposite "Denny Crane."

Salvador_PosterJames Woods

Best Actor Oscar Nominee - "Salvador"

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee "Ghosts of Mississippi"

From 2006-2008 James Woods, two time Oscar nominee, starred in 36 episodes (in the title role) of the CBS drama "Shark."

World_According_To_Garp_PosterJohn Lithgow

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "Terms Of Endearment"

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "The World According To Garp"

Granted, John Lithgow has made a few movies since his Oscar nominated performances, ("Harry and the Hendersons" anyone?), it is for his appearances in the Campbell's soup television commercials that keep him fresh in our minds, as of late. Also, don't forget that from 1996-2001 John Lithgow appeared in more than 135 episodes of NBC's sitcom "Third Rock From The Sun."

Places_In_The_Heart_PosterSally Field

Best Actress Oscar Winner - "Norma Rae"

Best Actress Oscar Winner - "Places In The Heart"

Currently, two-time Best Actress Oscar winner Sally Field can be seen on the hit ABC drama "Brothers & Sisters," a show for which she won the Best Actress Emmy Award. (Sally Field will also be seen on the big screen within the next twelve months, in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," a film she may win a third Best Actress Oscar for).

Bullets_Over_Broadway_PosterDiane Wiest

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner - "Hannah And Her Sisters"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner - "Bullets Over Broadway"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Parenthood"

Two-time Oscar winning actress Diane Wiest hung up her Oscars - and gained a few pounds - to take on the full time role of D.A. Nora Lewin on "Law & Order."

The_Piano_PosterHolly Hunter

Best Actress Oscar Winnner - "The Piano"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Thirteen"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "The Firm"

Best Actress Oscar Nominee - "Broadcast News"

Holly Hunter single handedly made TNT the cable network to watch first run dramas on. With "Saving Grace" Holly Hunter has made the transition from big screen to small screen magical.

6_Degrees_Of_Separation_PosterStockard Channing

Best Actress Oscar Nominee - "Six Degrees of Separation"

After decades on the big screen, including in the 1970s classic "Grease," Stockard Channing took a step back, to TV land and starred on the multi-Emmy winning "The West Wing" - which included an Emmy win for her.

Virginia_Woolf_PosterGeorge Segal

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?"

The Oscar nominated actor appears in reruns every night of the television sitcom "Just Shoot Me." In 149 episodes of "Just Shoot Me," George Segal played Jack Gallo.

Mrs_Brown_PosterJudi Dench

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Winner - "Shakespeare In Love"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Notes On A Scandal"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Iris"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Mrs. Henderson Presents"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Chocolat"

Best Actress Oscar Nominee - "Mrs. Brown"

Yes. Oscar loves Dame Judi Dench. And so do we. But lest one not forget her roles as Miss Matty Jenkyns in the current PBS (British first run) show "Cranford." And, previously on television as Jean Hardcastle on the PBS (British first run) show "As Time Goes By," and her role as Laura Dalton for three years in the 1980s PBS (British first run) sitcom "A Fine Romance."

Children_Of_A_Lesser_God_PosterMarlee Matlin

Best Actress Oscar Winner - "Children Of A Lesser God"

Granted, there are not many Oscar worthy big screen roles for the verbally challenged, but don't give Marlee Matlin any sympathy. After winning her Oscar, over 20 years ago, she popped up on the small screen regularly, in guest spots, until she secured a lead in "The West Wing," and after that show was cancelend, in the cable drama "The L Word," which is going into its sixth season.

Husbands And WivesJudy Davis

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "A Passage To India"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Husbands & Wives"

While Judy Davis never starred on television in a 'series,' she has been nominated for more Emmy Awards for made for television movies than anyone that I can think of; 10. And Davis has won three of those ten times at the Emmys for Best Actress, including at the most recent Emmys for "The Starter Wife."

The_Queen_PosterHelen Mirren

Best Actress Oscar Winner - "The Queen"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Gosford Park"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "The Madness of King George"

Before King George's madness or her Oscar win as Queen Elizabeth, Helen Mirren rose to international fame - on television - in "Prime Suspect."

Transamerica_PosterFelicity Huffman

Best Actress Oscar Nominee - "Transamerica"

While Felicity Huffman was a "Desperate Housewife," she was also a transexual, and nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role as one, too, in 2006.

Goodfellas_PosterLorraine Bracco

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Goodfellas"

Lorraine Bracco didn't seem to give a rat's ass that Hollywood dumped her pretty ass after her Oscar nominated performance in Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas." What did she care, after getting the role of a lifetime, on the TV show of a lifetime, Dr. Jennifer Melfi on "The Sopranos". And four Emmy nominations to boot for her role in "The Sopranos."

Cooler_PosterAlec Baldwin

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "The Cooler"

While Alec Baldwin may not be fetching millions for his big screen work, as of late, he is on TV. Ever hear of "30 Rock?"

Best_Little_Whorehouse_In_Texas_PosterCharles Durning

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas"

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "To Be Or Not To Be"

Charles Durning may not be on his way to his third Oscar nomination. But you can see constantly as Father Hubley on one of the most celebrated television sitcoms of all time - which will probably never go out of syndication - "Everybody Loves Raymond." And, currently as Denis Leary's dad on the highly rated cable television show "Rescue Me."

Forrest_Gump_PosterGary Sinise

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "Forrest Gump"

Gary Sinise is one of the former A-list movie stars going the TV route. For four years he has starred on the CSI spin-off; "CSI: New York."

Wild_At_Heart_PosterDiane Ladd

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Rambling Rose"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Wild At Heart"

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"

With not many directors coming knocking at her door - and shame on fucking them - for big screen roles, Diane Ladd has had the last laugh, making guest appearances on numerous television shows, (including "Cold Case" and "ER"). Diane Ladd also was on the Stephen King television series "Kingdom Hospital" in 2004 for its entire run.

Secrets_And_Lies_PosterMarianne Jean-Baptiste

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Secrets And Lies"

Marianne who? Trust me. You know her. You've helped make her show, which has been on CBS for over 6 years, one of the most popular each week. Marianne Jean-Baptiste stars opposite Anthony Lapaglia in the Top 20 Nielsen rated FBI show, "Without A Trace." And, there seems to be no end in sight for the show, either. Two more seasons have been secured, with both stars, signing on. Marianne Jean-Baptiste became a star overnight following the international success of the social drama "Secrets & Lies" in 1996, becoming the very first black British actress nominated for an Oscar. And, yes, Jean-Baptiste, like Hugh Laurie of the TV smash drama "House," has a naturally British accent, which she seamlessly gets rid of during each episode of "Without A Trace."

Babe_Movie_PosterJames Cromwell

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "Babe"

Before "Babe" Cromwell made a name as Stretch Cunningham on the 70s classic sitcom "All In The Family." After "Babe," and his Oscar nomination, James Cromwell went on to star in two hit TV shows: "24" and "Six Feet Under."

Ed_Wood_PosterMartin Landau

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Winner - "Ed Wood"

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominee - "Crimes And Misdemeanors"

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nominne - "Tucker: The Man And His Dream"

After decades of big screen successes, and Oscar nominations and a win, Martin Landau has toned it down with regular television guest appearances on "Without A Trace," "The Evidence," and "Entourage."

Twice_In_A_Lifetime_PosterAmy Madigan

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominee - "Twice In A Lifetime"

Amy Madigan, even after an Oscar nomination, couldn't make it on the big screen. But in 24 episodes of HBO's "Carnivale," she shined brighter than the north star. We do have to admit, however, that Ben Affleck was wise to choose her for a great role in the Oscar nominated "Gone Baby Gone."

Michael_Clayton_PosterGeorge Clooney

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Winner - "Syrianna"

Best Actor Oscar Nominee - "Michael Clayton"

Don't forget that after George Clooney got his big break on the small screen in "The Facts of Life," he made it big in the 1994 Michael Crichton television drama "ER" as Doctor Doug Ross. Needless to say, the show is still going strong in first run, without Clooney, but the reruns in which he appears are just as popular on television each day.

Moonstruck_PosterCher

Best Actress Oscar Winner - "Moonstruck"

Best Supporting Actress Nominee - "Silkwood"

Since her Oscar win for "Moonstruck," Cher has pretty much remained invisible on the big screen, concentrating on her singing career, geared towards the gays, (like Madonna), and don't forget those infamous infomercials Cher did after her "Moonstruck" Oscar win, which were even parodied on Saturday Night Live. But, we LOVE Cher, and hope she wins a second Oscar, even if we have to wait until she's 80, (and unable to sing and dance in concert), which isn't as far off as you may think.

The list above are actors who have gone from Oscar winning or nominated roles to television. (With the exception of George Clooney, who we had to throw in there). But if we were to add in actors who have been on television and went on to receive an Oscar nomination or win... we'd be here till the "2009 Oscars"

Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Alan Alda, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Woody Harrelson, Will Smith...

And don't get us started on the Oscar winning and nominated actresses and actors who are now pimping themselves in television commercials; Sally Field in the "Boniva" ads. Diane Lane in Neutrogena commercials. And Queen Latifah in the Pizza Hut and Cover Girl and Curvation TV ads.

We have the complete list of this year's, the "2008 Oscar Nominations" - and "2008 Oscar Winners" - and "2008 Oscar Ballot"
