If there was ever a reason for a PG-13 rating, (which didn't come along for another 6 years), Grease was the movie. The PG rated Grease could easily have been rated R at the time for the following reasons:
Sex & Nudity
3 characters moon a television camera, and you see male bums briefly while some people watch the TV program.
Many drive-in make out scenes with lots of sensuality. At the drive in movie, a teenage boy drapes his arm around the teenage girl and gradually lowers his hand until he grabs her breast. Then, he forces her into a horizontal position against her will. She struggles out from under him and storms out of the car.
A teenage couple have sex in the backseat of a car (no nudity is shown). They pause when his condom breaks but have sex anyway. Her suspected pregnancy is mentioned many times throughout the film.
In the dances, characters refer to making out, making thrusting movements. Lots of skirt lifting, too.
One girl makes fun of another girl's virginity.
Several sexual comments such as "the chicks will cream", and "gang-bang".
Profanity
The word Fuck used in Italian, pussy wagon, shit, and tit were used in Greased Lightnin', dozens of milder ones but rather strong, such as shit, bastard, asshole, etc, especially for PG.
