Raiders Of The Lost Ark

Theatrical Rerelease September 7, 2012

Read All About It: It's been a long while since anyone has seen or heard the term "Held Over" at any movie theater in the United States. Well, based on the immense business that Raiders Of The Lost Ark did in theaters during its intended one week rerelease, Paramount has extended the film's theatrical run for one additional week; this time not on IMAX screens, but exclusively in theaters that have digital projection cababilities.

Additionally, those who want to see every Indiana Jones movie, (the first three are great, the last one, starring Shia LaBeouf, is dreadful), can do so Saturday 15 September at select theaters during an Indiana Jones Film Festival. Click here for a list of theaters and showimes.

Indiana Jones

The About face: Indiana Jones, archaeology professor and swashbuckling adventurer, has unearthed many an ancient treasure. But now the very future of the world depends on his finding one specific relic.

With a bullwhip in his hand and a beautiful lady at his side, Jones journeys from Nepal and Cairo to the Mediterranean, dodging poisons, traps and snakes, battling rivals old and new, all in pursuit of an ancient artifact said to give invincible power to its possessor.

It's a battle to a startling finish, a finish dictated by the magic, the light -- and the power -- of the Lost Ark.

The IMAX release has been digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.

The Wild side: Steven Spielberg says, "I didn’t know if the 1981 print would stand up to a full IMAX transfer, so I came expecting a sort of grainy, muddy, and overly enlarged representation of the movie I had made [31] years ago. And I was blown away by the fact that it looked better than the movie I had made [31] years ago.

“All the shadows in the earlier scenes that we shot in Hawaii [were] always kind of muddy anyway on 35mm, because we couldn’t schlep all of our big arc lights down into this valley. Suddenly, there was definition in the shadows, which I had never seen before. And the shadows weren’t murky and washed out; they were sharp as a tack. I sat there, I think, probably with my mouth open a little wider than it normally is.

“When the boulder is rolling, chasing Indy through the cave, you really feel the boulder in your stomach, the way you do when a marching band passes by, and you’re standing right next to it.”

The Movie facts: Raiders Of The Lost Ark was the biggest movie at the 1981 box office, bringing in $209,000,000, in only 1078 theaters. Compare that to movies today, which are released in over 4500 theaters.

Adjusted for inflation, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, released in 1981, took in $706,000,000, making it the 19th most successful movie at the box office in history.
