77th Annual Academy Award Nominees & Losers
Who Will Win An Oscar on February 27, 2005?
by Tim Nasson (1/27/05)

2005 Academy AwardsThe list of current Academy Award nominees is out (complete list below) and wagers have been made. Who will win? Nobody knows. Yet. What we do know, though, is who and what did not get nominated this year, and there were some big omissions. The Academy, more than 5,000 voters, a large majority Jewish, cast their vote against Jesus Christ and Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. The film, which was 2004's third highest grossing at the box-office, taking in $370 million, (and the highest grossing foreign film with subtitles, and highest grossing R-Rated film), earned no major Oscar nominations.

Another highly controversial film, Fahrenheit 9/11, whose director Michael Moore won the Oscar for Best Documentary last year, (Bowling For Columbine), earned not a one Academy Award nomination. Not even a Best Actor nod for its main attraction, George W. Bush.

Not one of the Top Grossing 36 films of the year were nominated for Best Picture, and only one, Collateral, was nominated for a major Oscar. Jamie Foxx, nominated for Best Supporting Actor in that film, was also nominated for Best Actor in Ray, the 37th highest grossing film of 2004, and the highest grossing (to date) Best Picture nominee.

On January 25, 2005, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 77th Annual Academy Awards. And the nominees are...
