BOSTON SOCIETY OF FILM CRITICS WINNERS, 2006
December 10, 2006 - The Boston Society of Film Critics, formed in 1980 by the late (and former BSFC president) David Brudnoy, voted today for their favorite movies.
The Boston Society of Film Critics, along with The National Board of Review, The New York Film Critics Society and Broadcast Film Critics, are among the most influential precursors to the Oscars.
However, The Boston Society of Film Critics has only twice chosen the Best Picture that has gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar (1991, "The Silence of the Lambs" and 1993's "Schindler's List"). Will it happen again this year?
The BSFC picked "The Departed" as Best Picture and Martin Scorsese as Best Director, so the chances are, shall we say, great?
But we're not so sure about their choice for Best Supporting Actor. The ocean in South Boston smells a little fishy, today. Actually, of rotten fish.
Is there a blatant attempt to, perhaps, reward a certain Boston homie with a little undeserved acting recognition?
Did the Bostonians vote for "The Departed," especially Mark Wahlberg, because it is a movie that was filmed in Boston and that takes place in Boston?
"I don't think that had any effect on the movie winning, at all," said one of the members, who has been an active voter for more than a decade.
Best Film: "The Departed"
Best Director: Martin Scorsese, "The Departed"
Best Actor: Forest Whitaker, "The Last King of Scotland"
Best Actress: Helen Mirren, "The Queen"
Best Supporting Actor: Mark Wahlberg, "The Departed"
Best Supporting Actress: Shareeka Epps "Half Nelson"
Best Screenplay: "The Departed"
Best Cinematography: "Pan's Labyrinth"
Best Foreign Film: "Pan’s Labyrinth"
Best New Filmmaker's Film: "Half Nelson"
Best Ensemble: "United 93"
Best Documentary (TIE): "Shut Up and Sing" and "Deliver Us From Evil"
You may wonder how voting is conducted?
"It takes one over 50% of all votes for a movie to win the award. So none of today's winners won during the first round [of balloting]," says another longtime member of "The Boston Society of Film Critics."
"Everyone chooses three selections for each category up for awards, and lists them in order of their favorite; 1, 2, 3.
"A movie, theoretically could be on every voting member's ballot but not win because it may not be at the the #1 spot of at least one more than 50% of all ballots. In fact, 'Letters From Iwo Jima' was on almost all of the voters' ballots, but not in a high enough spot to win any award."
Another member went on to say, "Ryan Gosling was second in contention for Best Actor, for his role in 'Half Nelson.' 'Apocalypto,' also was in the running for Best Picture and Best Director awards."
