"August 17-19, 2007 Movie Box Office"
"Superbad" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com
August 2007 will become the most successful August at the box office - in movie history. Two August 2007 releases, "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Rush Hour 3" have already taken in over $100 million at the box office. And if all goes according to the hopes and wishes of Sony Pictures big shots, "Superbad," (produced by "Knocked Up" writer and director Judd Apatow, and starring and written by "Knocked Up" ugly man Seth Rogen, it), will also become a $100 million summer box office bonanza. "Superbad," ten years in the making, is actually funnier than "Knocked Up" and "The 40 Year Old Virgin" (also a Judd Apatow film) - combined. And since "Superbad" is geared towards the high school and college age demographic, (kids who are notorious for running out to a 'must see' movie the first weekend of its release), and since "Superbad" is a 'must see' movie this weekend, we predicted (pretty, well, almost, correctly) that the film, starring a bunch of (as of yet) unknowns, would kick ass at the box office - with at least $35 million. (Every other website and even Sony, the film's distributor, predicted less than $23 million). The last time a high school comedy, starring a bunch of juvenile nobodies (some who did become somebodies) made over $100 million at the box office was in 1999. The movie? "American Pie." If you can believe it, "Superbad" is better than the original "American Pie," and most teens will be lining up to see it not once, but two, three or four times. Sony Pictures was smart enough to drag the three main stars of the film around the country during the past two months, to college towns and show the movie for groups of hundreds of high school and college aged kids - who all declared, we must say, they couldn't wait to see it again, and again, when it hits theaters. Watch the R-rated trailer, and FIVE "Superbad" video interviews, including; the three stars - Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz Plasse - writer/star Seth Rogen, and producer Judd Apatow, right here. For a look at all other new movies that were released, including "The Invasion" - click here - And FYI - "Superbad" took in over $33 million its first weekend in theaters - just $1.7 million shy of our prediction. "The Invasion" and "The Last Legion" BOMBED with less than $6 million and less than $3 million respectively, their first weekend in theaters.
