"Superbad" #1

Superbad Movie Poster

No less than 14 new movies infested theaters this weekend - most utter trash, including the ten years in the making sequel to "Mr. Bean." That means that last week's #1 movie, the raunchy, teen magnet film, "Superbad," became only the third movie this summer to retain its #1 spot for two consecutive weekends, as it held on to its top spot. Other drivel in theaters this weekend: "War," "Illegal Tender," "The Nanny Diaries," "Eye Of The Dolphin," "Closing Escrow," "The Hottest State" and Jon Voight's "September Dawn." Mediocre film fare includes: "Hannah Takes The Stairs," "Dedication," "Resurrecting The Champ," "Right At Your Door," and "Duck." The best new movie of the weekend - by far, "Deep Water," a documentary (recreation) about a 1968 failed yacht trip around the world. Fascinating, if you can find a theater that is exhibiting it. Tying at #4 for the weekend, "Mr. Bean's Holiday" and "War," each with exactly a $10 million gross for their first three days in theaters. At #5, "The Nanny Diaries," with less than $8 million. Josh Hartnett has not resurrected his faltering career, as his latest, "Resurrecting The Champ," unimpressed with less than $2 million. Even worse, "Illegal Tender," with only $1.4 million. The biggest bomb of the weekend for a movie in at least 500 theaters; "September Dawn," the Jon Voight Mormon movie. It couldn't even grab $1 million.
