"August 3-5, 2007 Movie Box Office"
"The Bourne Ultimatum" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com
The third time was the charm for Matt Damon and "The Bourne Ultimatum's" Oscar nominated director, Paul Greengrass ("United 93"). The third film in the Jason Bourne saga - and one of nine films ("Pirates 3," "Spiderman 3," "Shrek 3," "Ocean's 13," "Rush Hour 3," "TMNT," "Die Hard 4," "Harry Potter 5") this year, which have been part of a trilogy, or more - debuted with over $70 million; nearly $20 million more than the second "Bourne," "The Bourne Supremacy;" and $45 million more than the original Bourne, "The Bourne Identity."
Last week's #1 movie, "The Simpsons Movie," dropped more than 60%, taking in $25.5 million. It will undoubtedly, however become the highest grossing non-Disney 2-D animated film of all time. And sequel is sure to arrive sooner, rather than later than 18 years - the length it took for the first big screen rendition of the 18 year old television sitcom.
Other new films this weekend, including "Walt Disney's Underdog;" SNL's Andy Samberg's (allegedly) "Hot Rod," (which interested just about no one), and those nasty "Bratz," all bombed, the latter two taking in less than $5 million.
In limited release, the Jane Austen based film, "Becoming Jane," starring Anne Hathaway, took in over $10,000 per screen, while the Jennifer Lopez biopic, "El Cantante," geared towards the Mexican and South American U.S. movie going audience, took in a healthy $6,000+ per screen.
One of the biggest high profile films of the summer, is a bomb; Michael Moore's "Sicko." While Moore's previous film, "Fahrenheit 9/11," broke box office records for a documentary, "Sicko," now on life support in theaters, dropping screen count precipitously each week since its release, will be lucky to cough up $25 million before it is put out - on DVD.
