Dukes Soar to the Top Dukes of Hazzard Opens at #1 by Wild About Movies (8/6/05)
"The Dukes of Hazzard" flew into first place on its opening weekend with an estimated $30.5 million. Trailing right behind was last week's #1 movie, "Wedding Crashers," which took in $16.5 million, bringing its four week total to $144 million. Also in its fourth weekend, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," feel to third place for the first time, raking in $10.5 million, which takes it to the $170 million mark.
Meanwhile, Warner Independent Pictures successfully expanded its hit documentary March of the Penguins from 778 to 1,867 theaters nationwide and it grossed an estimated $7.5 million, bringing its total gross to $27 million after seven weeks of limited release.
Last week's new arrivals, "Sky High," "Must Love Dogs" and "Stealth" all took steep tumbles in their second weekends of release, the greatest casualty being "Stealth," which dropped more than 56%. The movie which cost more than $100 million to make and half of that to market will be out of theaters before it can take in 1/3 of its cost.
