Dark Shadows, the first movie to give The Avengers some competition at the movie box office, failed to cast a spell or take a bit, shall we say, out of the enormous box office tally of The Avengers.

Dark Shadows grabbed just over $28 million its first weekend in theaters - and cost more than $100 million to produce. But The Avengers, during its second weekend in American multiplexes, flew away with over $105 million, and becomes the first movie - albeit with inflated 3D ticket prices; as much as 25% more per ticket than a standard 2D ticket price - to grab $100 million + during its second week of theatrical release.

The Avengers has received rave reviews from critics, but more importantly from audiences who, on average, have given the film an A+ grade.

The Avengers grabbed $207 million during its first weekend in theaters.

The previous record holder for highest three day gross was the final Harry Potter movie, with $169 million.

The Avengers features a cast of characters who have all beat up their enemies at the movie box office in separate movies, including Thor, Iron Man, The Hulk and Captain America.

Can The Avengers beat the $800+ million that Avatar grossed in America during its entire theatrical run?

Most likely.

But remember, the foolish folks in Hollywood still count box office bucks as if they were gold and report every movie's cash intake, rather than tickets sold. Which is stupid - since movies that were released in 1982, like E.T., which grabbed over $340 millon during its initial theatrical release, and Tootsie, with more than $176 milllion, if adjusted for inflation, would have earned a lot more than Avatar and Titanic.

It's time to start reporting the number of tickets sold for each movie rather than the nonsensical box office numbers, since ticket prices, with 3D and IMAX, don't fairly provide the correct details.

The Avengers has competition from Battleship next weekend and Men In Black 3 the weekend after.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel expanded - just a little, to 178 theaters (compared to the more than 4300 for The Avengers) and took the #8 spot at the box office this weekend.

Check out the complete list of upcoming movies - 2012 and 2013 movies - all movies now in theaters and coming soon.

Tim Nasson Announces Ten Summer "2012 Movies" That Must Earn $300+ Million, Or Else...

Bourne Legacy

With The Hunger Games grabbing more than $250 million during its first ten days in theaters , there is no question that there are ten Summer 2012 Movies that must earn well over $300 million during their runs, to avoid being considered bombs.

There is already one huge bomb this year, John Carter, which cost $250 million to produce (and another $50 to market in the U.S., alone) didn't even grab $70 million at the U.S. box office.

The Dark Knight Rises, (the final in the rebooted Batman trilogy). The Avengers, (featuring Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and, yes, Spider-Man). Battleship, (based on the board game of the same name). Men In Black 3, (starring Tommy Lee Jones & Will Smith). The Amazing Spiderman, (a Spiderman reboot). Ice Age 4. The Disney/Pixar film Brave, featuring the voice of Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon. Ridley Scott's Prometheus (an Alien prequel). Two movies haven't a chance to earn $300 million, but will be considered - by their respective studios - successful if they grab $200 million; Tim Burton's Dark Shadows (based on the 1960s TV show). And Madagascar 3.

G.I. Joe 2. The Bourne Legacy, (this time without Matt Damon). The final Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn: Part 2. And The Hobbit: Part 1, (a prequel to Lord Of The Rings) are also in movie theaters in 2012, but before or after Summer 2012.

And each, with the exception of The Hobbit - it must gross $300+ million - need to grab well over $200 million at the box office in order to be considered a success.
