"March 14-16, 2008 Movie Box Office"
"Horton Hears A Who" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com
This weekend promised to be huge at the movie box office - for families, at least. And was. 20th Century Fox bet that their "Horton Hears A Who" animated G-rated movie, featuring the voices of Steve Carell and Jim Carey, among others (including Carol Burnett), would be as big a hit as "Ice Age." While the film isn't of "Ice Age" proportions, the "Horton" movie has the same producers as "Ice Age 3" - and easily slid into the #1 position at the weekend movie box office, with $45 million. Also new in wide release this weekend, in movie theaters, but hardly box office sensations, "Chaos Theory," starring hottie Ryan Reynolds; "Doomsday," and "Never Back Down," which competed for the testosterone fueled 17-24 age range of males. In very limited release, (i.e. you're out of luck unless you live in NYC, or maybe Los Angeles): "Funny Games"; "On Broadway"; "The Hammer"; "Flash Point"; "Sleepwalking"; "War Made Easy"; "Towards Darkness"; "Wetlands Preserved" "The Heartbeat Detector" "Blind Mountain" "Grand Canyon Adventure - IMAX," "Meat Loaf: In Search of Paradise" and "Sputnik Mania."
While "Horton Hears A Who" captured #1 at the movie box office its first weekend in movie theaters, the only other new movies to crack the Top 10 were "Never Back Down," at #2, and "Doomsday" at #7.
