"Boynton Beach Bereavement Club" First Look In Select Theaters Now
After gaining a cult following among Florida's senior citizens, the geriatric sex comedy "Boynton Beach Bereavement Club" has been picked up for national distribution by Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films. The companies nabbed U.S. distribution rights to Susan Seidelman's look at dating in a retirement community, which has earned $635,000 since the director began distributing the film at Frank Theatres. It has played on 28 screens in Florida and one in Palm Springs since March. "Boynton" is expected to receive an R rating because of senior citizen nudity, but the distributors don't seem deterred by losing the lucrative "tween" audience. "There's never been a film like it - an event movie for senior citizens," said Roadside co-president Howard Cohen, whose mother lives in Palm Beach.
Susan Seidelman had a string of modest hits in the mid 1980s, beginning with Madonna's "Desperately Seeking Susan" and followed by "Cookie," (starring the what-ever-happened-to Emily Lloyd?), "Making Mr. Right," (starring John Malkovich), and her biggest film, "She-Devil," which costarred Meryl Streep and Roseanne Barr.
Based on a story by Seidelman's 74-year-old mother Florence, this is a romantic comedy about the human capacity to rebound and fall in love at any age. Lois, Harry, Marilyn, Sandy and Jack live in an "Active Adult" community in Boynton Beach, Florida. Their lives intersect when they meet at a local Bereavement Club where they go to find emotional support after the loss of a loved one. For anyone who thinks that new love and romance ends long before retirement, they're in for a reality check. No one sees themselves as becoming old, and the residents of Boynton Beach aren't about to start. But sometimes we all need a little reminder that life is worth living and sharing.
