"Poltergeist" First Look In Theaters October 4, 2007
ONE NIGHT ONLY
"Poltergeist" - While living an an average family house in a pleasant neighborhood, the youngest daughter of the Freeling family, Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke), seems to be connecting with the supernatural through a dead channel on the televison. It is not for long when the mysterious beings enter the house's walls. At first seeming like harmless ghosts, they play tricks and amuse the family, but they take a nasty turn- they horrify the family to death with angry trees and murderous dolls, and finally abduct Carol Anne into her bedroom closet, which seems like the entrance to the other side.
While "Poltergeist" was a huge box office hit, ($77 million in 1982, which would be over $300 million, today), the movie was more famous for the deaths of its star: Heather O'Rourke, Dominque Dunne (daughter of Dominick) and other strange occurrances during the filming of the two "Poltergeist" sequels.
It was alleged, in fact, Tobe Hooper's name is attached to the original poster of "Poltergeist" as the film's director. However, common sense, as well as word from reputable Hollywood sources is that Steven Spielberg directed the flick, in addition to producing it. All the proof you really need is the film itself. Watch "Poltergeist" and then any Steven Spielberg movie made during the 70s or 80s, and see his stamp directly on it. And watch any Tobe Hooper movie, and see no comparisons whatsoever. Why did Spielberg hire a ghost director? At the time, 1982, the year after "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and the year of "E.T.", many who advised Spielberg said that people, audiences, you, wouldn't go see a supernatural horror movie directed by the man who invented the summer family blockbuster - "Jaws." We think the film, "Poltergeist," would have earned even more at the box office, in hindsight, if Steven Spielberg had attached his name to the director's slot.
