"Walt Disney's Rapunzel" is an animated movie that looks and feels like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic in 3D - as it will be released in movie theaters in 3D.

"Walt Disney's Rapunzel" was animated in both traditional and CGI backgrounds.

Co-director Glen Keane has stated numerous times that with "Walt Disney's Rapunzel" he made the computer "bend its knee to the artist" instead of having the computer dictate the artistic style and look of the film. By making the computer become as "pliable as the pencil," Keane's vision of a "three dimensional drawing" was within reach, with the artist controlling the technology. Because many of the techniques and tools that were required to give the film the quality Keane demanded of it didn't exist when the project was started, Walt Disney had to make them on their own.

Among the new tools that are being used in "Walt Disney's Rapunzel" is a graphics tablet, first used in Chicken Little, allowing artists to draw silhouettes and sketches of the animated characters (in the same manner and freedom as a traditional 2-D animated Disney film) directly onto the computer screen. These hand-created character silhouettes were then "filled in" with a computer-generated 3-D image, for instance by superimposing the handdrawn image over the 3D model. To create the impression of a drawing, non-photorealistic rendering was used, making the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions. Test footage of the film was shown in 2005 to great acclaim.

Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth provided the voice of "Rapunzel."

In this new telling of the classic fairy tale, “Rapunzel,” audiences will be transported to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair…lots of hair, when "Rapunzel" unleashes her locks in theaters for the 2010 holiday.
