The movie Black Adam, starring Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson in the title role, is a spinoff of Shazam. Black Adam is based on the DC Comics character of the same name who is a former avatar of the Wizard, and who was condemned for using his powers for selfish reasons. He is also an enemy of Shazam.
The film will not feature Shazam, as it is intended to introduce audiences to the character, (just as Shazam didn’t feature Black Adam).
The character was teased in Shazam. When the Wizard first summons Billy Batson to the Rock of Eternity, the Wizard tells the story that thousands of years ago, he had chosen a champion to be worthy of his powers, only for that champion to cause death and destruction. A golden hologram appears inside the Rock of Eternity as the Wizard tells the story, clearly showing the previous champion, Black Adam, who turned to the dark side and used his powers for evil, resulting in the Seven Deadly Sins being unleashed.
Black Adam, given name Teth-Adam, was born in 13th-century Egypt, and, as an adult, was chosen to receive the power of Shazam, just like Billy Batson in the modern day.
The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, whose Dwayne Johnson Disney film, Jungle Cruise, is his first potential blockbuster. He previously directed the House of Wax remake (the box office bomb starring Paris Hilton in 2005), the Liam Neeson films Non Stop, Unknown, Run All Night and The Commuter, and the horror film Orphan.
Warner Bros. plans on making multiple sequels, beginning in 2022, featuring both characters.
