As of today, Guardians Of The Galaxy is the biggest hit of at the summer movie box office, with over $250 million at the US movie box office.
However, until Star Wars 8 comes along, nothing will unseat Beauty And The Beast as the most popular movie at the 2017 movie box office. The film has amassed over $500 million at theaters in the U.S., alone.
There are some 2017 Summer Movie Releases that might overtake Guardians Of The Galaxy for Top movie of Summer 2017. They include, but most likely will not be; Alien: Covenant, Despicable Me 3, Cars 3, The Mummy, Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, Transformers 5, Spiderman Homecoming, Wonder Woman, Baywatch, War For The Planet Of The Apes and The Dark Tower. There is no doubt that each of the aforementioned will earn well over $200-$300 million in the U.S., but will not come close to eclipsing the half a billion that Beauty And The Beast has raked in. If there is ONE picture that can, it will be Despicable Me 3.
Other Summer 2017 Movies that will probably earn between $100 and $200 million include: Captain Underpants, All Eyez On Me, The House, Dunkirk, The Emoji Movie and, perhaps, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Annabelle 2 and The Nutjob 2.
There is probably not going to be a bigger bomb during the summer than King Arthur. The film cost more than $225 million to produce and market but will end up taking in less than $40 million at the U.S. box office.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is the big budget Summer 2017 Film to give King Arthur a run for its money in the Biggest Bomb of the Summer award. We’re predicting less than $50 million, total, in the U.S.
Summer 2017 is considered any movie released in theaters between May 1 and Labor Day 2017.
