American food scientist Linda Watt (Brie Larson) is much more comfortable in the lab than in a foreign country, but that doesn’t stop her boss at a multinational agricultural corporation from sending her to India to test out Rice 9, a new type of genetically-modified rice that she has developed. Thrown into the middle of everyday Indian life, Linda tries to adjust to a drastically different culture. As she finds herself increasingly drawn to handsome local Rajit (Utkarsh Ambudkar), Linda discovers a terrible secret about Rice 9 that could have devastating consequences for the community.
