Frankie Heck is a wife and a mother trying to make things work with her not quite dysfunctional family. Her husband Mike is a bit hapless and he needs to be managed just as much as the couples three unruly children. The three children: Axl, Sue, and Brick continually make things interesting for Frankie with their various plots and schemes. Frankie must micromanage the family if there is to be any hope of avoiding catastrophe.
By the ninth and final season, Frankie and Mike Heck had hoped to find themselves with an emptier nest, allowing them to cut back on their parental duties. But with Axl now back at home with Brick, they find that hope quickly fading. A recent graduate, Axl returns home from Europe with a new, chill Euro look on life. Although Mike still wants him to get a job, he’s getting serious with Lexie – prompting the dreaded meeting of their families. Meanwhile, Sue and her neighbor, Sean Donahue, will have to work out their unrequited feelings for each other. And Brick decides to break up with his quirky girlfriend, Cindy, so that he’s not tied down and can finally be more popular. But, because he’s a Heck, things probably won’t go quite as smoothly as he’d like. It’s time to say farewell to this average – yes, most definitely average – family.
