The movie Bernstein is a portrait of Leonard Bernstein’s singular charisma and passion for music as he rose to fame as America’s first native born, world-renowned conductor, all along following his ambition to compose both symphonic and popular Broadway works and while being openly gay.
Bradley Cooper stars as Leonard Bernstein. Cooper also directs the film as his follow up to A Star Is Born.
Originally set up at Paramount, the film was sold to Netflix, which is giving it a limited theatrical release to qualify for 2021 Oscars.
A competing Leonard Bernstein movie, The American, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, was going to arrive in theaters in 2020, as well. But the movie has been put on ice.
