Master filmmaker Barbet Schroeder makes one of his most personal films to date with Amnesia, a beautifully-shot story that takes place in the early 1990s about a German expat living in Ibiza who befriends a young aspiring composer from Berlin. Martha, played with exquisite grace by Marthe Keller, has been living alone in her house facing the sea for forty years. One night Jo (“Sense8’s” Max Riemelt), an aspiring DJ, knocks on her door. Her solitude intrigues him. They become friends even as the mysteries around her accumulate: a cello in the corner she refuses to play, the German language she refuses to speak… As Jo draws her into the new world of techno music, Martha puts everything she had previously lived by into question.
