"November 2-4, 2007 Movie Box Office"
"American Gangster" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com
The big surprise this weekend is not that "American Gangster" did well. It's that "American Gangster" beat "Bee Movie," by over $7 million. And "American Gangster" clocks in at 2 1/2 hours, (1 hour longer than "Bee Movie") and opened in nearly 1000 fewer theaters than "Bee Movie" (an embarassment, definitely, for Dreamworks). "American Gangster" robbed the bee hive this weekend. The questions are, how will "American Gangster" hold up at the box office - it got dreadful reviews - and whether or not it will become an Oscar favorite!
Also new in wide release: the Cusack tear jerker "Martian Child," which bombed on arrival.
Last week's #1 movie, "Saw 4," dropped to #3, yet has amassed over $50 million at the box office during its first ten days in theaters. As much as "Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married?" has accumulated in four weeks.
This weekend huge Box Office take, over $110 million for the Top 10 films, combined, has given U.S. theaters the boost they have needed since August. This is the first time since summer that two movies have earned $40 million the same weekend.
Limited releases "Darfur Now" and "Joe Strummer" failed to impress.
With the potential $100+ million blockbusters "Mr. Magorium," "Fred Clause," "Walt Disney's Enchanted," "The Mist" and "Beowulf" hitting theaters during the rest of November, this may promise to become the biggest November at the box office in history!
