"Beowulf" #1 - But Cursed
at www.wildaboutmovies.com

Beowulf-Poster

The most exciting new movie in theaters this year, the first (we thought) wide release Digital and IMAX 3D movie - ever - "Beowulf" - bred PAIN for Dreamworks - deservedly so. Although the PG-13 rated "Beowulf" debuted at #1 with $28 million, "Beowulf" is a major box office disappointment - perhaps because 2/3 of the theaters "Beowulf" is playing in are NOT equipped for 3D. And, we'll let you in on a secret - "Beowulf" is playing in conventional 2D to empty (no humans in seats), rat and cockroach infested houses. (Keep in mind, the R-rated "American Gangster" opened at #1 two weeks ago - with over $43 million). All other new films in release this weekend also took a dump at the U.S Box Office. The first filmed adaptation of the classic novel "Love In The Time Of Cholera." It, grabbed less than $2 million. The little-kid friendly film, the G-rated "Mr. Magorium," that Fox was hoping would be this year's "Night At The Museum," tanked with just $10 million. In limited release, The Rock's "Southland Tales," 63 theaters, nationwide, grabbed a meager $117,000.

Best at the box office: "No Country For Old Men," in only 148 theaters, took the #7 spot at the box office, earning more than $21,000 per screen. Compare that to the #2 movie of the weekend, "Bee Movie," which averaged under $3,500 per screen.

Even more spectacular box office results: Nicole Kidman's "Margot At The Wedding." Granted, the film played in only 2 theaters, but it racked up $83,000, or more than $41,000 per screen.
