BOX OFFICE BULLSHIT
OK. So we all know that "Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" has amassed an 'impressive' $415 million! Yes. It's also the movie to have the boasting power of THE MOST MONEY IN ITS FIRST TEN DAYS - IN ALL OF HISTORY. Or is it, really? Well, technically, yes, it earned $259 million, in its first ten days, but it was by no means the movie that sold the most number of tickets during its first ten days in theaters.
While inflation has been rising steadily for, well, since the beginning of time, when people traded sheep for salt, movie box office reporting has never changed, which is something that needs to be addressed. How can anyone be 'amazed' at "Pirates 2" earning $259 million, in its first ten days, when ticket prices are now averaging $7? In 1982, the summer "E.T." was first in theaters, the average adult ticket price was $2.
This nation is the only one that reports box office grosses for movies, and movies are the only bit of entertainment measured monetarily in this country, we might add. CDs? Measured by volume, number of units sold. TV? Measured by number of viewers watching any particular episode. Sporting Events? Measured by number of tickets sold each season. Concerts? Measured by number of seats filled. It's high time that Hollywood puts an end to the nonsensical, self-aggrandizing style reporting of BOX OFFICE! Oh, by the way, yes, "Pirates 2" made $259 million in its first ten days, but it was in over 4,000 theaters. "E.T.," mind you, after adjusted for inflation, would have earned $907 million during its entire theatrical run - and it opened in only 1100 theaters. "Pirates 2" will be lucky to earn $325 million during its theatrical run, which, today, compared to prices when "E.T." was in theaters, would amount to a measly $275 million. Oh, and get this, there are three movies that, after adjusted for inflation, even beat "E.T."...
#1. "Gone With The Wind," after adjusted for inflation, would have earned $1.3 Billion at the Box Office during its theatrical run. Frankly, we don't give a damn.
#2. We have the George Lucas masterpiece "Star Wars," yes, the first one, released in 1977, at number two on the all time "adjusted for inflation" list. With $1.139 Billion.
#3. Julie Andrews, no lie, is in the third spot, after we adjust for inflation, $911 Million.
"E.T." is constantly fighting "The Sound of Music" for the #3 "adjusted for inflation" spot at the box office. And we're sure it will overtake the movie sooner or later, especially if it gets a much anticipated re-release in 2012 for its 30th Anniversary! Yes, it's only 6 years away! Tick, tock!
And where is "Titanic," the "Highest Grossing Movie Of All Time?" Not even in the Top 5, after adjusted for inflation. Check out the link below for the list of the Top 100 movies adjusted for inflation.
