"October 19-21, 2007 Movie Box Office"
"30 Days Of Night" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com

This weekend, for the second in a row, sees a dozen or more new films in theatrical release.
"30 Days Of Night," the so-so vampire horror film, starring (
"40 Days And 40 Nights") stud Josh Hartnett, was the most successful, sucking a lot of money from wallets its first weekend in theaters, coming in at #1. However, the film fell far short of a $20+ million opening, managing only $16 million for its first weekend. ("30 Days," however, will not see darkness of theaters for "30 Days" as next week's
"Saw 4" will carve up all of the competition). No one cared about any other new releases this weekend - with the exception of the 13th Anniversary rerelease of
"The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D," on only 550 screens, (compared to 2855 screens for "30 Days"), which came in with the highest per screen average of the weekend. All other new releases crash landed - were DOA. Really. For those not interested in puking up their popcorn,
"The Comebacks," it stars Matthew Lawrence in the lead - (yes, that little brat that starred on TV's "Gimme A Break" in the 1980s), and Ben Affleck's alleged directorial debut tied for #5. Other movies that will soon be collecting dust on DVD store shelves, certainly not yours:
"Rendition," (#9);
"Things We Lost In The Fire," (#15), with only $1.5 million at the box office for its first three days in theaters. An exceptionally huge disappointment for Dreamworks, their second in a row, behind "The Heartbreak Kid," which also bombed opening weekend;
"Reservation Road" (not even in the Top 30); each of which star at least one Oscar winner. And the independent films
"10 Commandments The Animated Movie," (#24);
"Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour," (#19); and
"Wristcutters," "Meeting Resistance" and
"Out of the Blue" not even registering in the Top 25. Also, in very, very, limited release, a couple of theaters in the Scottsdale, AZ area,
"Local Color," and
"Canvas." The only Oscar worthy film new in theaters this weekend?
"Gone Baby Gone." The acting is impeccable. But, sadly, it could only manage a little less than $3000 per screen, its first weekend in theaters, compared to over $9100 per screen for "Nightmare Before Christmas." Last week's limited release
"Lars And The Real Girl," starring last year's Best Actor nominee Ryan Gosling, expanded a tad, not impressing many. Finally, on DVD for nearly a week,
"Transformers The Movie: IMAX," managed to come in #22, higher than many new releases.
