"The Brave One" #1
at www.wildaboutmovies.com
Last week saw thirteen new films in theaters. This weekend, the number of new releases is eclipsed by one. In addition to Jodie Foster's
"The Brave One," and Seann William Scott's
"Mr. Woodcock" and
"Dragon Wars" in wide release, we have, in limited release: Oscar winner Paul Haggis's
"In The Valley Of Elah;" Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe in
"December Boys;" the fantastic Beatles musical
"Across The Universe;" the always sexy, effeminate and naked Michael Pitt in
"Silk;" David Cronengerg's
"Eastern Promises," revealing Viggo Mortensen in a 4-minute nude scene;
"King of California," starring Michael Douglas;
"Moving McAllister;" the critically acclaimed
"Great World of Sound;" "Ira and Abby;" "Moondance Alexander" and the right-wing, religious propaganda film
"Return With Honor." Without any doubt, even though it sucks, "The Brave One" was #1 for the weekend, taking in $14 million. Surprisingly, "Mr. Woodcock" and "3:10 To Yuma" tied for #2, with over $9 million each. All in all, however, a very stale weekend at the box office. The biggest and best surprise? "Across The Universe," in limited release, (only 23 theaters), grabbed more than $30,000 per screen coming in at #17. "Eastern Promises" did even better. $37,000 per screen. "December Boys" and "Silk" both bombed in limited release.
